Former Armed Forces Chief and Defense Secretary Angelo Tomas Reyes committed suicide on Tuesday morning in front of the grave of his mother in Loyola Memorial Park. The former AFP chief was rushed to the Quirino Hospital at about 7:45 a.m., upon arriving at the hospital, he was without pulse and is no longer breathing. Doctors tried to resuscitate him, but after 45 minutes, about 8:32 a.m. he was proclaimed dead. He had a gunshot wound to the heart and an external wound to the back.
Reyes in one of the personalities under the congressional investigations on the alleged AFP financial irregularities, said he could not take anymore the smear campaign against his name and his family.
Reyes is married to Teresita P. Reyes with five sons, Pablo, Angelito, Marc, Carlo and Judd. He was 65 (March 17, 1945 – February 8, 2011).
Angelo Reyes was AFP chief under President Joseph Estrada. During the term of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo he was the secretary of defense, interior and local government, and energy.
Reyes, a graduate of Philippine Military Academy Class ’66 and was one of the top graduates of PMA. He went on to obtain Masters in Business Administration from Asian Institute of Management in 1973 and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government in 1991. He also took up International Defense Management Course in Monterey, California in 1983.
