Before the social networking sites, search engines like Google has dominated the web industry. Now we can see that people are spending more and more time using social networking sites. Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook was just launched in 2004 but has more than 500 million members. So why is the Internet Search Leader Google Inc not building a social network to compete with Facebook?
"We're not working on a social network platform that's just going to be another social network platform," Google's head of mobile product development, Hugo Barra, said in answer to a question at the Monaco Media Forum. "We do think that social is an ingredient for
success for any app going forward, search and advertising being probably the best two examples that I would mention. So that's how we're thinking about the problem."
Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said that the company intends to add social network features to its sites rather than building its own social network to compete with Facebook. But people are still speculating a Google Social Network in the works. Google already owns a social networking site, Orkut, which is said to be popular in Brazil and India. But it did expand beyond those countries.
They better hurry making a Google Social Network soon. Maybe Facebook is going to have a more reliable search engine within its site in the future? Or Google is "in" Facebook?
